Accommodation
IPS have summarised hotel / bed and breakfast information for Leysin in early December – click here

Venue
Registration for the conference will be at the Beau Site Welcome Centre, 3 mins walk up-hill, 100m on the right, from Versmont railway station (Leysin’s second railway stop). This will be signposted. The school’s main tel. is 024 493 3777, and our cellphone for the conference registration desk will be tel. 078 881 3325 but see below for full conference contact information.

Village Situation
Leysin is a mountain village at 1,263m altitude, approx. 135 kms south-east of Geneva by road, in Canton Vaud. There are excellent road and rail connections via Aigle, the nearest town in the valley. Leysin is both a winter and summer resort, although in early December relatively quiet, as several hotels take an early winter break before the ski season starts. The local tourist office runs a comprehensive website at www.leysin.ch and e-mail address is info@leysin.ch (postal address below).

Maps
We have provided simple maps of Leysin village and the LAS school campus, please click to view.

Road Directions
Car parking in the vicinity of the school is extremely limited, and on a first-come, first-served basis. We therefore highly recommend arriving by rail. The nearest parking to the school is at Feydey railway station, 5 mins uphill from the school.

Leysin is 124 km / 1hr 30mins from Geneva Airport via the motorway system {from the airport follow green motorway signs for Lausanne (E25, E62 and Red 1) After 50 kms bear right for Bern / Neuchâtel / Simplon / Gd. St-Bernard / Lausanne-Nord (E25, E62, motorway Red 1 and Red 9). After 104 kms follow signs for Leysin / Aigle / Ollon / Villars then signs for Les Mosses / Pillons / Leysin / Les Diablerets and Aigle (Route 11) and then follow signs to Leysin out of Aigle}. Leysin is a 20 min. drive from Aigle, via a good mountain road which is normally kept clear of snow. Follow the main road into the centre of the village (CoOP carpark on left, La Lorraine restaurant ahead) and continue 100m to a small roundabout (village Post Office on the right), circle around the roundabout, doubling back uphill, and follow this road uphill for 1/2km. This will take you past Versmont railway station; continue under the bridge, and the Beau Site Welcome Centre is 100m on the right. As mentioned above, parking will be at Feydey railway station, which is another 0.5km up the hill. If you are driving to Leysin, we strongly advise checking forecast weather/road conditions (and phoning us beforehand for the latest information) and planning accordingly. Weather information is available on the Internet – see below.

We suggest using a good online route planner (i.e. www.viamichelin.com ) for complete directions from your home town. If in difficulty contact IPS for an individual itinerary. A village map will be issued to delegates to locate the school.

Motorists crossing the border into Switzerland will need to purchase a motorway tax ‘vignette’ for SFr40 from the Swiss Customs Office (although rented cars may already have a current tax disc).

Rail Travel
Nearest main railway station is Aigle (trains direct from Geneva and Geneva Airport, Lausanne and Montreux), where one changes to the local mountain cog railway to Leysin (boarding in Aigle Station forecourt – the carriages are brown and cream and marked AL). Fare from Geneva Airport is approx. SFr60 return. There is an hourly service Aigle – Leysin (i.e. leaving Aigle 0838am arriving Leysin Versmont 0906am, leaving Leysin Versmont 1644 arriving Aigle 1718 and Geneva Airport 1851). Information should be checked from TPC (Transports Publics du Chablais) tel. 024 468 0330 e-mail: info@tpc.ch Full timetable is on the Internet at www.tpc.ch

Excellent mainline rail information websites are Swiss Federal Rail and German Railways both of which handle inter-European travel in several languages. We suggest that you query these search engines with your nearest main station, plus Leysin-Village (via Aigle).

There are four railway stops in Leysin Village (1st stop), Versmont (most convenient for LAS, the school is situated 3 mins walk uphill from this station), Leysin-Feydey (main station which is 5 mins uphill from Leysin American School) and Grand Hotel. Taxis can be ordered (see below) although we suggest you follow your hotel’s advice as a collection service may be available (make sure you confirm nearest stop).

Air Travel
Geneva is the nearest international airport, with excellent rail services to Leysin (via Aigle) from the internal airport station. Allow 1hr 20 min from Geneva Airport to Aigle, 3hr from Basel (change at Bern and Lausanne), and 3hr 20min from Zurich airport (change at Bern and Lausanne). Aigle to Leysin is approx. 30 min.

Car Hire
Numerous airport car hire outlets exist as one would expect, although competitive rates are also available on the Internet with Holiday Autos. Hiring a car on the French side of Geneva Airport can be more economical (although motorway tax of SFr40 may be payable if your hire car lacks a Swiss tax disc).

Refreshments will be provided during the conference. An excellent lunch will be available, prepared by Leysin American School’s chef, at SFr25 per delegate; full details will be sent to delegates in advance.
